Police Release Few Answers Regarding Women Found Dead on Lookout Mountain

Police are still looking for clues and more information in the case of murder victim found on Lookout Mountain. A criminal appeals lawyer in Tennessee explains what few details have been made known so far.

How the Victim’s Body Appears to Have Been Found
A hiker on Lookout Mountain happened upon a disturbing scene at Windy Saddle Trailhead. The hiker discovered the body of a woman who appeared to have been stabbed to death. It took police almost twenty four hours to process the scene. As a criminal appeals attorney in Tennessee explains, the victim has now been identified as 38-year-old Sandra Mercado. It is unclear whether the victim was actually murdered on the mountain or at another location and dumped there after the fact.

What Has Been Released About the Victim
Details are still sketchy about the victim herself. She appears to have lived in the Aurora area and worked at a Mexican restaurant. Police have indicated that Ms. Mercado may have some criminal history herself and she was allegedly engaged to an inmate in California. Apparently, she was planning to marry the inmate upon his release. It is unclear whether anything in her background would provide a motive for her killing.

Police are still looking for leads that could help them in this investigation and are relying in part on tips from members of the public who may see this story in the media. Therefore, anyone with any information is urged to contact the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at 303-271-5612 or Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867).
