Lawyers for O.J. Simpson File Latest Appeal to Overturn 2007 Robbery Conviction

Since his 2007 conviction for armed robbery and related charges, O.J. Simpson has filed several unsuccessful appeals. As a criminal appeals lawyer explains, his latest bid to the Nevada Supreme Court has just been filed on his behalf.

The Case History Surrounding O.J. Simpson’s Robbery Conviction
In perhaps the most famous murder trial in American history, O.J. Simpson was acquitted of murdering his ex-wife and Ron Goldman in 1995. Today, his lawyer’s claim the notoriety from that infamous trial impeded his right to a fair trial in his 2007 robbery case. According to Nevada appeals lawyers, Mr. Simpson was convicted of orchestrating an armed robbery of two sports memorabilia dealers at a Las Vegas hotel. He is serving up to 33 years for that conviction and is not eligible for parole until 2017.

The Basis for the Current Appeal
Mr. Simpson has filed multiple appeals in the seven years since his robbery conviction. Much of the basis for those appeals stem from his claim that his robbery jury was tainted by the notoriety he received during and after the 1995 double murder charge and acquittal. Each of his appeals has been denied by lower appeals courts. He has also been denied a new trial based on the same theory. Simpson now claims his attorneys at trial and earlier appeals were ineffective.

O.J.’s Next Step
O.J.’s latest appeal is to the highest court in Nevada, the Nevada Supreme Court. If he loses there, his options for continuing his appeal will become extremely limited if not completely exhausted. The Nevada court must also rule on whether it will accept the appeal as Simpson’s lawyers have exceeded the 14,000 word limit by nearly 6,000 words.
