The Texas First Court of Appeals is an intermediate appellate court that reviews decisions from lower trial courts and helps ensure consistent application of Texas law across the region it serves. Located in downtown Houston, the court handles a wide range of appeals and issues opinions that guide litigants attorneys and courts throughout Southeast Texas.

Established in 1892, the First Court of Appeals is among the oldest intermediate appellate courts in Texas. It hears civil and criminal appeals from district and county courts within its geographic jurisdiction and also considers certain original proceedings when extraordinary relief is requested.

Jurisdiction and Responsibilities


The Texas First Court of Appeals has jurisdiction over

• Civil appeals from trial courts within its district
• Criminal appeals from district and county courts, except matters involving the death penalty
• Original proceedings seeking extraordinary relief such as mandamus in appropriate cases
• Review of records briefs and oral arguments to resolve issues of law and procedure and publish opinions that guide lower courts
