The Texas Third Court of Appeals has jurisdiction over

• Intermediate appellate review of civil and criminal cases appealed from lower courts within its district
• Civil cases and proceedings as authorized by Texas law and court rules
• Criminal appeals, excluding matters where jurisdiction is placed elsewhere such as death penalty cases and certain post conviction proceedings
• Original proceedings seeking extraordinary relief such as mandamus when appropriate
• Issuance of written opinions that guide appellate practice and support uniform application of Texas law
